Shelfcare: Your Bathroom Deserves It.😉

A little history, a little color, and a fresh look at vintage ceramic bathroom shelves.

A bathroom refresh doesn’t have to start with a sledgehammer. Sometimes, it starts with a shelf. Perhaps a turquoise one beneath the mirror. A pair of curry-yellow shelves stacked above each other. Or a glossy white vintage find against a wall in your favorite color. Add a lovely soap, give your toothbrush a proper home, and suddenly that practical little room feels a little more personal. We call it shelfcare. And yes, your bathroom deserves some. 😉

When Having a Bathroom Was Quite the Luxury

It’s easy to take a bathroom of your own for granted. But the private, fully plumbed bathroom became an everyday expectation surprisingly recently. Separate bathrooms existed in wealthy homes long before the 20th century. For many other households, however, washing meant a pitcher and basin on a bedroom washstand, while bathing involved a portable tub filled and emptied by hand. During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, expanding water supplies and improvements in sanitaryware production helped bring fitted bathrooms into more homes. The change was gradual, and access varied enormously between places and households.

Once the bathroom had a room of its own, there was another question to answer: what should go in it? Beyond the bath and washbasin, everyday essentials needed somewhere to live. Enter the humble bathroom accessory.

A Proper Home for the Toothbrush

By the 1920s, manufacturers were offering coordinated ceramic bathroom accessories, from soap dishes and toothbrush holders to towel fittings. A surviving 1924 Willette catalog, held by the University of Southern Mississippi, even included a diagram showing how to arrange the accessories. Apparently, deciding where the toothbrush belongs has been serious business for quite some time. The selling points sound familiar: practical surfaces, straightforward cleaning, and a place for the things you reach for every day. Ceramic bathroom shelves belong to this broader tradition. Their precise beginnings are harder to pin down than one neat invention date, but they certainly weren’t a brand-new idea when the colorful postwar models arrived. What changed was the mood.

Then the Bathroom Joined the Decorating Party

The 1960s and ’70s brought a growing enthusiasm for bathrooms with personality. Blue, green, curry yellow and pink appeared across bathroom interiors. Coordinated fixtures and accessories helped turn a functional room into a considered part of the home. Why should the living room have all the fun? The shift went beyond color. In 1975, Luigi Colani developed a bathroom concept for Villeroy & Boch that emphasized ergonomics, coordinated design and individual color choices. It reflected a wider ambition: the bathroom could be somewhere to enjoy spending time, too.

Our vintage ceramic shelves sit beautifully within that colorful design story. Their glossy glazes, rounded edges and sculpted profiles give even a small piece of storage a presence of its own. Useful? Absolutely. Quietly blending into the background? Entirely optional.

A Small Shelf, Quite a Lot of Character

One of our favorite things about these 1960s and ’70s pieces is how easily they can work in a different setting today. You don’t need a complete avocado bathroom suite to enjoy a green ceramic shelf. Nor do you need to recreate a period interior around a blue one. Against white tiles, a colorful glaze becomes a cheerful focal point. With natural bamboo, warm wood or a vintage mirror, it feels right at home. And there’s something particularly satisfying about giving an original piece another chapter in the very room it was made for.

A Little Shelfcare at Home😉

Start with the spot that could use a little help—or a little joy. Beneath the mirror: A blue ceramic shelf keeps daily essentials close while adding a splash of color. Double up: Two matching curry-yellow shelves create a lovely vertical arrangement. A white pair can look especially striking against a colorful wall. Mix thoughtfully: Different colors can work beautifully together when towels, a bath mat or a small piece of art pick up a few of the same shades. Keep the styling simple enough to enjoy the shelf itself. Your favorite soap, a toothbrush cup, perhaps a small plant where the light allows. Beautiful things can earn their place by being useful, too.

An Old Idea with Plenty of Life Left

Ceramic bathroom shelves are still made today, including contemporary designs in color. The appeal of a practical, attractive wall-mounted perch hasn’t disappeared. Our vintage pieces bring something particular to that enduring idea: original shapes and glaze colors from an era that gave the bathroom permission to be a little more expressive. A little self-care for you. A little shelfcare for your bathroom.
