Shortages, nacre and the former GDR

Necessity is the mother of invention!

Those who have been following our newsletters for a while may know that I grew up in the former GDR. This ceased to exist in 1990 with the reunification of East and West Germany. Until then, however, the economy in East Germany had to struggle permanently with a comprehensive shortage of raw materials. One positive side of this shortage was the great ingenuity that resulted from it when it came to substitute products and needed materials.
In furniture design during the 1960s, for example, a surface coating was developed that could best be described as "faux-nacre". We have some vintage treasures with this surface in our collection here on VINTARAMA. They are not only an absolute eye-catcher, but also easy to clean and relatively insensitive. In addition, you can now tell an exciting background story about these pieces. An excellent conversation starter, aren't they?
